History

A team called Lock Lane Brittania first operated in 1932 out of the pub near to the Griffin but an organised side was originally formed around 1938, the club was then disbanded during the war years, but was reformed again in 1947, quickly becoming established as not only a fundamental part of the community but also one of the country's most respected amateur sides.
3 County Cup titles and 2 narrow semi-final defeats alongside the formation of intermediate sides established the club in the 1950's. In 1958, Lock Lane qualified for the Rugby League Challenge Cup and repeated the feat in 1960.

However, the 60’s proved to be lean years for the club. The loss of their famous ground The Sandy Desert in 1962 led to a nomadic existence around Castleford.

The 1970s saw a turn in fortunes with yet another qualification to the Challenge Cup. The Lane almost staging the biggest upset in Challenge Cup history before going down narrowly 14-10 away at Fartown to Huddersfield. In 1972, Lane won the Yorkshire County Cup for the 4th time before qualifying in 1974 in the Challenge Cup to play the mighty Wigan at Central Park eventually losing 39-7. A year later they reached the professional stage of the John Player Cup losing 32-6 away to Whitehaven. As BARLA formed, the district leagues naturally gravitated to a regional basis and Lane were the first 3 champions of the Yorkshire League starting in 1978.
The 1980’s saw Lock Lane continue to flourish, winning the Yorkshire Cup in 1982 and reaching the National Cup Finals in 1981 and 1983. Having secured the Sandy Desert once again and the acquisition of the Bath Inn - soon to become the famous or infamous “Early Bath” - Lock Lane were perhaps unfortunate not to be one of the foundation clubs of the BARLA National League. However, this was rectified in 1989/90 when the league was expanded.

In 1995 Lock Lane acquired a new ground, Hickson's Arena, and in 1998 opened the excellent Sports & Leisure Club, which has given the club one of the finest facilities in the amateur game, as well as being the envy of many professional clubs.

Lock Lane have produced a host of top class players from their junior and youth ranks: Paul Broadbent (Sheffield Eagles, Halifax, Hull FC), Paul Anderson (Bradford Bulls, St. Helens), Grant Anderson (Castleford), Chris Bibb (Featherstone) and more recently England International and Hull FC Captain Gareth Ellis to name but a few, that have worn the Blue & White Lock Lane shirt.

Lock Lane Junior Section reformed in 1996 and after a couple of seasons without Junior sides, now boasts 12 junior & youth teams from U7’s to U18’s. Lock Lane was the first club in the region and one of the first in the country to be awarded the prestigious CLUBMARK GOLD Award.

Lock Lane holds a unique record for amateur clubs in the Rugby League Challenge Cup. They are the only amateur club to have qualified for the third round on eight successive seasons. In 2016, they became only the 3rd amateur side to reach the 5th round of the challenge cup
