Cas 34 Wensleydale 27
VP's treated to a cracker
Saturday saw Castleford's VP lunch, old players reunited all wanting to see a good game of rugby, they were not to be disappointed.
Cas had started the season playing some good rugby but knew this week would be a stern test.
Cas started brightly with the forwards dominating possession and scrum half Chris Mchale
releasing the backs to test out the opposition defence. Wensleydale were tackling strongly and space was hard to come by. Adam Brown
and Jamie Owens
led from the front and were running the ball in hard however the sides were cancelling each other out. Cas didn't have it all their own way and some big hits from CHRISTIAN HEAD and GARETH PETERS stopped the opposition making too much ground. The first score came on 9 mins when Cas were penalised and the opposition had no hesitation in kicking the first 3 points of the afternoon.
Cas kept to the game plan and it took hard work and time to break through the dogged defence. Thomas Dobson
picked a superb angle to come onto a flowing attack and raced in to score in the corner. The conversion from the touchline went agonisingly to the side of the sticks.
Wensleydale came straight back at Cas and spent the next 5 minutes camped just outside the Cas 22 however another penalty was awarded against Cas and this too was kicked to put the visitors back in the lead.
Cas seemed to come alive after this and some quick attacking ball was putting pressure on Wensleydale. MCHALE put in an exquisite cross field kick which Danny Price
was on the end of to score. TOM EGAN was back on song with the conversion.
EGAN was soon making a darting break and was about to get tackled when he offloaded to NATHAN CAMPSIL who's was backing up like all good wingers do, to score his first try of the season. EGAN kicking the extras.
Half time was looming but unfortunately Cas were to leak a try just before this and stern words would be spoken in the half time huddle.
As the second half began it seemed that the visitors had also had a talking to. Wensleydale were the scorers of the first try of this period and Cas had spent a long time on the back foot, and while the defence had been solid, there had been too many big runs from the opposition forwards which wore Cas down.
Cas were next to score when Ian Mattison
caught a clearing kick inside his own half and fed PRICE who broke through the cover with a chip and chase he then found Karl Del Rosario
who in turn passed to HEAD who still had lots to do but a very strong finish saw him beat the covering defence and bag his first of the campaign. EGAN missed the conversion but shortly after kicked a penalty to put us 7 points ahead. Wensleydale would not give up and some dogged running and great team play saw them score in the dying minutes to level the scores. That looked like it was going to be how it finished but, on the last play, MATTISON put a cross field kick into space; Joe Crossland
regathered and drew the fullback to find DOBSON backing up to score under the posts. EGAN kicked the final points and the VP's certainly got to watch a great game as well as having a great afternoon catching up with old colleagues.
Final Score Castleford 34 - Wensleydale 27; the visitors certainly deserved to take something home from this encounter but Cas' never say die attitude saw them home when they needed it
