Swans glide to hard fought win
Winnersh Rangers arrived at Clayfield and looked strong and organised in the early exchanges. Caversham started to pass the ball and find their feet and took a deserved lead with Lally breaking the back line and shooting low past the keeper. Her “limbo” goal celebration was very much appreciated by the Caversham supporters !!!! Caversham were defending well with Olivia first to every ball and Winnersh were getting frustrated. An almost identical attack gave Caversham a second goal ....... with Lally finishing off Grace’s through ball. Caversham went in at half time with a well deserved lead. To Winnersh’s credit they came out for the second half with renewed determination and pushed even more players forward........ and the Swans started to wobble. After some sustained pressure from Winnersh they managed to grab a goal back with around 20 minutes to go and suddenly Caversham started to look tired and nervous ......... then with 8 minutes to go the referee awarded a very harsh penalty following an innocent clash of legs in the box. This was Serena’s moment and she made a fantastic save and also managed to hang onto the ball like a sticky bun !!!! What a hero !!!! That should have been that but in the remaining 7 minutes Winnersh flooded forward and had two good chances to draw level ......... which thankfully sailed past the post. Niamh and Martha didn’t back down in this crucial part of the game. The final whistle bought a sigh of relief and a cheer and a second straight win for the Swans. It was an excellent team performance with everybody playing their part and even with Lallys goals and Serena’s save ......... player of the match was given unanimously by the coaches to Olivia who didn’t stop running and dominated her winger being first to almost every ball ⚽️. A great win from the girls !!!!
