Sir Alex Ferguson praised Manchester United's terrific performance after they beat Stoke 2-0 to draw level at the top with rivals Manchester City.

Penalties either side of the break from Javier Hernandez and Dimitar Berbatov saw the Red Devils easily beat a below-par Potters.

Ferguson's injury-hit squad are now level on points with rivals City as the title hunt hots up.

The United boss told Sky Sports: "It was terrific - I thought our performance was very, very good.

"We kept playing our football, we kept moving the ball and played with great consistency and we could have won by maybe more - we should have had another two penalties I think.

"When you see we have won by two penalties it doesn't really reflect how we performed, I thought it was a good performance by us."

Scholes praise

The United boss praised Paul Scholes, who has recently returned from retirement, for a masterful performance in midfield.

"He's a fantastic player - you can't believe he's been out for six/seven months and comes back and plays like that, he's just got that beautiful touch on the ball, he's got feathers on his feet."

Former United player Darron Gibson scored for Everton to beat City at Goodison Park and Ferguson said it had gone down well in the Red Devils' dressing room.

"It was a good night for us all round - our old boy Darron Gibson scored too which is a nice boost - all the players are pleased for him in the dressing room.

"And we're on the coat-tails of them (City). And we'll keep it that way."
