An overview of the 2017/2018 season from captain Alan Cheffey

What were your team's targets at the beginning of the season and did you achieve them?

The team always aims for a high table finish in this division which we certainly achieved finishing 5th in the table (behind our 2nd XI who finished 2nd). This was a good effort for us considering we are made up of the oldies and many of the younger players playing their first full season of hockey.

Who was your player of the season this year and why?

Our player of the year this season was Riley Millet. Riley only turned 13 in December (the league's age requirement) but played every match following this. Riley also attended all training sessions and really took on board all instructions given to him which showed in his performances on match days. Riley's development throughout the season even saw him playing for our 2nd XI on the last game of the season.

Who was your most improved player and why?

Our most improved player this season was George Broomfield. Once we discovered that he actually played full back at school he was faultless!

In which game did the team put in their best overall performance in your view?

In my view the team put in their best performance when they played and beat the eventual league winners at home 2-1. This showed how strong a team we were in our league and also, how far our younger players have developed throughout the season.

Which league will you be playing in next season and what are your hopes for next year?

Next year we will be playing in the same league again, namely The GoCrea8 Hockey League South East 2 Division. Hopefully we will again finish in the top half of the table and who knows, we might even follow our 2nd XI into South East 1.

Are you hoping to keep a similar squad next season, or are there gaps needing filled by fresh faces?

As a development team for our younger players, I expect we will lost a couple youngsters to the 2nd XI; however, luckily we have a thriving junior side at our club and there will be more young players turning 13 who will be eligible to play for us. Like most years we will also lose a couple to University and in addition, I will be stepping down as captain, a role that I have held for several years. As such, we will be looking for someone to take over this role!
