Chard 2nd XI 7 West Dorset A 1
Chard gained revenge for a narrow defeat at Bridport in November with this emphatic victory, extending their unbeaten run to five matches and closing the league table gap between the sides to just one point.
Ian Waite was again at the heart of midfield orchestrating many of Chard’s best moves and he put the result beyond doubt soon after the restart, firing a shot from Chard’s first penalty corner of the second half low into the corner of the net. Day’s first half goal had been a demonstration of solo persistence but this was matched by Chard’s sixth goal from Justin Green. He ran an angle from right to left into the D, resisted the attention of keeper and defender, leaving both on the floor before turning and calmly scoring with a push into the net.
The second half was only midway complete when Waite added a seventh, biding his time after receiving the ball from another penalty corner before whipping in a vicious shot which the keeper touched but could not stop.
Chard’s back four of the outstanding Simon Green, Chris Knight, the tireless Paul Tratt and Steve Mahoney coped fairly comfortably with West Dorset’s attacking forays but the visitors earned themselves some late penalty corners, requiring Richard Green to make saves. They scored a consolation goal on the hour when an unmarked forward latched onto a cross having missed a similar opportunity a few minutes before. From thereon Chard shut up shop and ran the clock down with little further alarm.
