Chard came away from Ashton & Backwell with a well deserved victory by 2 goals to 1. A goal in each half saw Chard home in a game where they played some good attacking football in the first half and defended well later in the game for a final push to get the winner on 89minutes.
The early part of the game saw some good work from the midfield with both Max Westlake and Ed Butcher going close with well judged efforts. Following a free kick on the edge of the area Butcher again was brought down this time within the penalty area. Leigh Bailey stepped up to hammer home the spot kick to put Chard ahead.
The second half saw Ashton & Backwell attack early on and with a break down the left flank and cross well they equalized with a first time shot which gave Chard’s ‘keeper Jason Hutchings no chance on 55mins.
Chard defended well and with a minute remaining they set up an attack down the right wing for Scott Holland to cross with an accurate ball into the home area and find Oscar Latas in position to head the ball home and claim the three points.
