Chard finish season with win
Chard Town with two goals in the second half ran out deserved winners at Bishop Sutton last Thursday in the final match of the season to take them up to a final ninth position in the 1st Division League table.
On an excellent playing surface both sides used the wide pitch well to provide some good fast football. Bishop Sutton had the best of the early attacking play but Chard won a corner on 10 minutes together with a cross by Max Westlake headed wide by Ben-Salem and a shot over the bar minutes later.
A free kick for Bishop Sutton on 30 minutes was cleared well by Kieran Bailey. With end to end play the first half ended with both sides having equal of the attacking play.
Chard commenced the second half with a chance from a corner and free kick together with a Bailey shot away for a further corner. A period of Bishop Sutton pressure ensued with a shot over the bar and a further effort wide. Chard’s ‘keeper Jon Hill was in action with two well-judged saves. Sub James Boyland came on for Pat Golden on 65 minutes and Chard stepped up a gear and several good moves led to the opening goal on 77 minutes when Kieran Bailey laid the ball on for Boyland to score from some 22 yards with a great first time half volley.
A second goal followed some 3 minutes later when following good work down the left flank Ben-Salem was in position to score with a powerful strike into the home net.
This was a good competitive match with a result which no doubt pleased Paul Down in his final match as Manager which showed the progress he has made with the team over the two-year period he has been in charge.
