It is with great sadness that we learnt of the death of our former manager Cliff Painter, 68.

Cliff was known by all as "Bodger" and was part of Benny Brown's management team in the mid 1990s.

When Brown stepped down from the managerial role - due to work commitments - at the end of November 1995, Painter took control of first team affairs for the end of the 1995-96 season and the whole of 1996-97.

A team that struggled in the Midland Alliance in 1996-97, finishing 18th, Cliff Painter always remained a popular manager at the club and even to this day would ask supporters how the team were doing and how well they were playing.

Painter managed the club for 81 matches, winning 25, drawing 21 and losing 35.

Current goalkeeping coach John Birt, who played 68 of those 81 matches under Bodger said, "Very sad to hear of the passing of my old gaffer at Chasetown FC Cliff Painter. A top bloke who I owe a lot too. R.I.P Boss and thank you."

Another former scholar, John Winwood added, "Cliff's motto was, 'it's great to be alive' - a motto that was used at every training session."
