Cheadle Town took occupancy of Park Road Stadium in 1982 and, 30 years ago today (Aug 12), they officially ‘opened’ the ground with a prestigious international friendly against El Saad from Qatar.

Here is an extract from the match programme issued to commemorate the occasion

“Welcome to Park Road Stadium for this friendly International soccer match. Grasmere Rovers are the only amateur club to travel all over the world and in fact have done this now for the last 20 years. We have been welcomed and entertained in all corners of the world so it gives us very special pleasure to entertain a club from overseas at our own ground at Cheadle. It is an honour to welcome the players and officials of El Saad SC from Qatar.

“Qatar is a small country in the Middle East on the Persian Gulf bordering Saudi Arabia and El Saad are on a visit to this country under the direction of Jimmy Meadows who was a right back in his playing days with Manchester City and England.

“We have head a lot recently about the emerging soccer nations and Qatar made an astonishing appearance on the international soccer scene last year when they reached the final of the Junior Cup Finals in Australia. They were beaten in the final by West Germany but on the way they incredibly beat Brazil and England.

“El Saad tonight have five players who are in their National squad. Kalhed Salman scored a hat-trick against Brazil – how many players can say they’ve done that? Whilst Beder Belal scored the goal; that knocked England out of the Championships. Other internationals are goalkeeper Mohamed Wafa, central defender Mobarak Anber and midfield player Nasser Salim.

“Two foreign players are allowed to play for each club in Qatar and El Saad are complemented by midfield players Paolo from Brazil and Ahmed Omar from the Lebanon.

“We wish our friends from Qatar an enjoyable stay in this country and we look forward to an interesting game which we hope all spectators will enjoy.”

For the record, Town lost the game against their illustrious opponents, 4-1.
