Cheddar’s under 8’s travelled the short distance to Chew Valley RFC at the weekend. Cheddar where keen to prove they were no fools and had improved since the last encounter. The weather resembled a day in July rather than the 1st of April and as the sun shone play got under way. The teams played two games, both sides had enjoyed themselves so much a third game was played. The first match was a keenly contested affair with both teams matching each other try for try. Cheddar’s Matthew Lorimer opened the scoring for the visiting side with tries from Cami Chew (3) and Archie smith (1) with Lorimer adding 2 more to his total before the final whistle. Cheddar’s tagging was excellent, Sam Perry, Tom Batten and Blake Hemmings provided great support for the try scores. Game ended in a draw 7-7.
Game 2, got underway and continued on from the previous match with both side matching each other try for try. Cheddar’s Sam Perry made a great solo break to put Cheddar ahead at half time. The trio of Lorimer, Chew and Smith all added to their try scoring tally with some great passing balls from Perry and Hemmings allowing them to break through Chew’s defence. Cheddar continued to pressure there opponents in the second half and long spells of the game saw excellent tagging from both sides. The ball was now moving around the field with some lovely passing and good handling from both teams. Cheddar added two more tries this half but it was the whole teams effort organising play that impressed the coach. Again the game ended in a draw 7-7.
Game 3, Chew had made some changes for this match and brought on some fresh legs but cheddar only had the 8 they started with. Cheddar were keen to make the most of the weather and the game got underway. Cheddar started strong with tries from Chew and Perry. By the start of the second half Cheddar were showing signs of tired legs and Chew valleys fresh blood really started to show. Lorimer and Smith added to Cheddar’s score but in the end the home side finished strong beating Cheddar 9-6.
A great morning of rugby with excellent play by both teams.
