Cheddar Valley senior rugby had been out in the wilderness for nearly 10 years, and its down to a few men and a great community that this sleeping giant of somerset rugby is finally back where it belongs in league rugby.
Playing friendly matches for a number of years against local vets teams and other Somerset league teams, it didn't take long for Management and players alike to realise that this team of youth and experience was good enough to hold their own. A Senior committee formed by player/Club Chairman Patrick Cullen, together with Rugby Coach and ex Cheddar player Craig Furneaux, pushed for league rugby in the 2010/11 season. Getting Paul Stephens(ex Nailsea&Backwell) to Captain the team was another step in the right direction, as his ability to bring 2 or 3 additional influential players was paramount to the seasons success. Going into the unknown of Somerset 3 North, Cheddar Valley RFC quickley learned the high's and low's of league rugby. Winning the first five matches of the season Cheddar were on cloud 9 but in a tough match which should have been won, the team was brought back down to earth with a bump realising just what had to be done to reach the top. Cheddar played some inspirational rugby through the season gaining invaluable experience in home and away wins over Clevedon, Yatton and further doubles over Stothert & Pitt, Frome and Oldfield Old Boys. The Club have during the season also managed to accquire the services of ex bath player and Ireland under 21 international Gary Higgins.
With additional Management set in place for the 2011/12 season Cheddar Valley RFC are a Club with a purpose and that means the next step is to gain promotion to Somerset 2 in the 2011/2012 season. A very respectable 3rd place finish in the first season has certainaly not quenched the thirst for further success...
