Chelmsford 14 Wanstead 36
London 2 North East
Chelmsford again started with a much changed team from the previous week. Wanstead have lost only once this season are second in the league. Consequently it was always going to be a difficult game for the Chelmsford team.
Playing up the slope Chelmsford started well, keeping the ball tight and making good progress by forward drives. Chelmsford, as they have been all season, are susceptible around the fringes of scrums and rucks where there have been gaps for the opposition to make in roads. Both the first two tries, scored by Wanstead, originated here, the first when the Chelmsford centres were brought in close leaving space out on the wing for Wanstead to score and the second when the centre burst through untouched.
Chelmsford came back into when a good drive by the forwards released Marcus Pollinger, who showed good pace to go under the posts for a converted try. At this stage Chelmsford were providing good ball in both lineout and scrum and it was disappointing that from a five yard scrum Wanstead scored a third converted try. Half time 19 to 7.
The game remained competitive for the first 15 minutes, but a penalty and two tries in ten minutes put the game out of Chelmsford’s reach. Chelmsford were still winning ball but their defence was extremely brittle. Chelmsford did eventually use the slope and a good kick from Whitlock and follow up allowed Ross Toomey to score under a converted try.
The game gradually fizzled out with both teams suffering injuries.
Director of Rugby Eddie Gooby said after the game once again we had to make nine changes from the previous week . Nine games into the season we have gone past the 50 players used so far.
The players who pulled on the shirt today did us proud and this gives us all a good feel factor moving forward.
We just need some consistency in selection and i am sure our first win is around the corner. Lets see if i can put the same squad out this week for the cup game
Final Score 36-14. Next week will see Woodford visit Coronation Park in the Essex Cup k.o 2.00
