Under 14s victorious against Welwyn
Another great turnout from CVRFC, who this week were hosting Welwyn B for a friendly match at the Guild, and another score line reflecting a whirlwind of achievement from the U14s
Welwyn, suffering from some key injuries and players away at county development, managed to hold the valley for only a short time before Ed opened the scoring with a try after only 2 ½ minutes, sprinting from just outside the Valley’s 22, leaving himself an easy conversion with the ball placed neatly between the posts.
It looked like Welwyn had settled down after this opening shock when, 4 minutes later, they pushed the Valley’s pack over the line from 5 yds to bring the score to 7-5.
However, with 10 minutes played, Joe broke free and in another footrace, this time from Welwyn’s 10m line, set up a straight forward conversion for Ed. With the ball placed neatly between the posts.
This was to be the tone for the rest of the first half with the footraces continuing until half time with Ed. and Joe alternating at:
15mins Ed. - converted by Adam
17mins Jo’s turn running back the kick off.
And at 21mins Ed again converted by Adam to stretch an ever increasing lead out to 35-5.
Welwyn’s spirit was not defeated however, and it took some excellent play by the Chess forwards rucking and moving over the ball to bring play within striking distance for Matt, who had been showing a determination having returned from injury, to join the score line, breaking free inside the Welwyn 22 and running in a try, again converted by Adam.
With only a few minutes left in the first half Eion managed to score from some solid play set up by Adam struggling through the crowd. Adam converted to bring the half time score to 49-5
Welwyn came out for the second half still with heads up, and held the scoring down. At 36mins, Jo made his hat trick, Adam providing another conversion.
Welwyn then had Chess on the ropes inside their 22 for a series of rucks, that had the defensive team skills showing - a really spirited goal line blockade. Welwyn did not come away empty handed, scoring a try in the corner, excellent persistence and discipline from the Welwyn forwards.
Welwyn had managed to even the odds out at last as the support for their strong forwards began to come together, they prevented Chess from breaking away on all but two more occasions:
With 50 mins played Ed from the halfway line, downhill, was not going to be caught, bringing his total to 5 tries for the match, this last of which Matt converted it for him.
With only a couple of minutes left to play, Eion ran in his second try of the match, which Adam converted to leave the score at CVRFC Lots - Welwyn not so many.
Thanks to Alfie, Louis, Jack, Oliver F and Joseph for putting in a spirited performance with Welwyn, it’s all in the Rugby ethic lads well done.
And finally, a sound-bite from Mr Trainor: “Eoin had a cracking game and Ruben too – both worked tirelessly and some fantastic tackles too. I thought Michael did well and stamped his position on the pitch….grow in stature, if not in physical size I thought. Rafe played well at 7, but George did best at 9…..a really solid performance by him. They [Welwyn] did close down Adam well, but he had some very strong runs down the centre, breaking tackles.”
Let’s hope the boys can take this form to their next fixture away to Datchworth
