U14 Shield Old Albanians B vs Chess Valley RFC
by Michelle Fry
A cold and drizzly early morning at the Old Albanians ground saw the U14 squad in full force for their final match of the season.
With great support from the sidelines, the game started at a fast pace and saw the boys working well together.
Old Albanians took an early lead with two trys but no conversions taking the score to 10 – 0.
Chess Valley pushed on and the tackling by the boys was hard and effective. Particular mention to George for a brilliant tackle in a fast moving run by OA’s.
Another try by OA’s with no conversion took the score to 15 – 0.
The Chess Valley boys kept their composure and played on as the tight unit they have become. They put pressure on OA’s and continued to push forward.
A valiant effort and a fantastic tackle by Josh, gave OA’s something to think about.
A few minutes later, with some fancy footwork and a quick turn of pace, Adam carried the ball across the line for Chess Valleys first try of the game. A brilliant kick by Adam secured the conversion taking the half time score to 15 – 7 to OA’s.
As the boys returned for the second half, Chess Valley had OA’s rattled. As the Chess boys pulled together, OA’s lost a little confidence and discipline.
Great tackling by Chess Valley saw Toby stop OA’s in their tracks on more than one occasion.
A try by OA’s with a conversion took the score to 22 – 7.
The Chess boys kept OA’s from their line by working together and demonstrating huge determination.
After a long period of great defensive play on our try line, OA’s scored a final try taking the full time score to 27 – 7 to OA’s.
Although the result was not what the boys wanted, they must be commended on their conduct throughout the game. The Chess Valley boys maintained a focused and determined attitude and fought on to the end. The saying about ‘keeping your head whilst those around you are losing theirs’ seems apt!
The boys received their runners up medals and should be very proud of their achievements.
I for one have learned so much from watching the boys this season, not only about the game of rugby but about the gentlemen our boys have become. They are a great team, a group of good friends and definitely a force to be reckoned with going forward.
