McNeil signs for the Blues

By Jeff Banks, Friday June 3

Chester FC have completed the signing of former Stockport County player Matty McNeil from Southport.

Neil Young revealed the news to ChesterFC.com this evening, and said that McNeil is a great addition to the squad, and revealed that the player could play in various positions, "Matty has great experience and can fill two positions for us. He is an excellent target man up front but is also a very good central defender who can play on the left side to give us balance, which gives us more options within the squad. I am glad that Matty has chose to join us as there was a number of clubs chasing his signature from leagues higher up the pyramid."

McNeil featured 19 times for Southport last season in the Conference, scoring 5 times, before he made 41 appearances for Stockport, also scoring five goals during his time at Edgeley Park.

McNeil, 34, who started off his career at Stalybridge Celtic in 1999 went on to be prolific at Hyde United scoring 47 goals in 142 games, before a successful loan at Macclesfield resulted in a permanent transfer to the Moss Rose outfit.

Welcome to Chester, Matty!
