'No More Mud' Tournament
Cheetahs win again at No More Mud
The third time the Chester Cheetahs have made an appearance at the “No More Mud” Touch Comp and the third time they have come away with the silverware.
A much younger, less experienced and nervous Chester Cheetahs arrived at Platt Lane Sports Complex on what was a cool but sunnier day compared to the previous years. After the team set up camp, Vic lead the Cheetahs in a warm up to make sure both the younger and older muscles where prepared ready for a full day of Touch.
That day started with their first game against L.A.L.T, a mixed team of experienced and inexperienced players. The guys had a shaky start but soon got themselves into gear taking the lead through Touch Downs from Jo and Jake but then losing concentration to allow L.A.L.T to score three. Final Score
L.A.L.T 3 – 2 Chester Cheetahs
After a brief break to discuss the first game and to take on fuel the Cheetahs faced the experienced, Plate Finalist’s, the Percy Park Pirates and a very picky Ref………!
The score line wasn’t a pretty one but the team never gave up, reverting to the basics, driving hard up the field and then trying desperately to break a very strong Pirates defence. When it came to their own defence the Cheetahs pressed hard but where broken by the same back door manoeuvre.
Percy Park Pirates 7 – 0 Chester Cheetahs
The last game of the groups saw the Cheetahs face the Nottingham Hoods, yet another experienced team who went on to play in the Cup Final.
The game started about 10mins late and saw the Hoods move straight into some very well drilled moves which stressed the Cheetahs defence the whole game. It wasn’t all bad….. well it was really, as Alex made a clean break and scored just after the hooter, leaving the Hoods looking round at the Ref. The Touch Down wasn’t officially recorded on the score sheet, but we know it did.
Nottingham Hoods 6 – 1 Chester Cheetahs
Next up was Team Orrell (winners of the Bowl Final). Again, a team with some experienced and fast players who took the lead over the Cheetahs from the start and score twice. But the Cheetahs had a secret weapon in the guise of the nimble feet of Johnny Dover. Johnny took the ball and at speed literally tip toed along the last few metres of the side line to score in the corner. This wasn’t the end as Orrell scored once more to seal the game.
Team Orrell 3 – 1 Chester Cheetahs
So, after a BYE the Cheetahs faced the Radbroke Rebels in the Final of the Shield. A very close fought match saw the Rebels score first but the Cheetahs dragged it back with Rob scoring, making it one a piece, and that’s where it remained until the hooter. The Dropoff and the Rebels Tapped off driving hard up to the Cheetahs 10 only to be stopped by an interception from Jake. The Cheetahs drove back up the field only give away a drop ball which saw the Rebels attack once again, and again were stopped by a strong Cheetahs defence. Turn over ball, and the Cheetahs attacked once again up the field. Ellen took the fourth drive in and dumped the ball for Paul to scoop and pass to Jake, then after months of listening to the coaches a moment of inspiration, Paul rapped and took a nicely timed ball from Jake to run the remainder of the pitch and score…..
