Matson left their kicking boots at home and Skipper Tom Waddington sports a pair of shiners thanks to off the ball thuggery as he leads from the front

Chew Valley 26 Matson 20
How Matson must rue not having a kicker as left winger Ryan Woodham missed two kick able penalties in the first half and the conversion of his try, whereas Chew Valley fullback Tom Bryan hit five out of six in the first half as the home scrum dominated. The home line out faltered to keep Matson in the game and for the first 15 minutes of the second half they dominated as Chew Valley could not keep the ball or gave away penalties. Fullback Vince Mourtian mised a penalty and the conversion after prop Neil Rose rumbled over for a try from a line out maul. When right winger Arron Moorfield intercepted as Chew Valley put the ball wide he had the gas to go 3/4 the length of the pitch to score and bring the game level at 15 a piece with 14 minutes of the second period gone, Mourtian having wasted the chance to put his side ahead.
The Western Counties new boys regrouped led by skipper Tom Waddington at flanker who was subject to some off the ball nonsense which left him with two shiners and a split lip. Bryan slotted two more penalties as referee Craig Pocock lost patience with the tackler not releasing. The superior fitness of the home pack began to tell in the final 20 and the introduction of Luke Sparkes Brown and Richard Light gave extra zip. When tight head prop Jonny Eves turned playmaker with a show and go and a pop pass to put Bryan in space, Matsons unbeaten run was over although a further interception as Chew pressed gave winger Woodham the chance to run in from halfway for the bonus point and losing bounds point which kept his side second in the table on points difference. The last kick of the game by Mourtian was missed.
