Third time lucky for Winscombe
This was the third meeting between these two sides this year and in a close game, Winscombe just edged out in front to record their first win over Chew.
Even in the warm ups Winscombe looked threatening. They were clearly fired up and keen to avenge the two defeats Chew had inflicted on them earlier in the year. Within the first five minutes Chew were lucky to escape when a strong Winscombe move saw a touch down in the right hand corner which was disallowed for an earlier forward pass. This seemed to wake Chew up and there then followed some tight play resulting in a good pick up by Sam Wedlake who sprinted to the line to open the scoring for Chew. Winscombe responded with some excellent penetrating runs and new player, Perry Cunio, had to execute a brilliant try saving tackle to prevent Winscombe from levelling the scores. Winscombe continued to apply the pressure and this finally paid off when the Winscombe number 8 picked up from a 5 yard scrum and crashed over the line to level the scores. Just before half time, a wayward Chew clearance kick was easily fielded by the Winscombe full back, who in the absence of effective Chew tackling, made a deep run into the Chew 22. The ball was effectively recycled allowing the Winscombe backs to score in the right hand corner.
The second half saw Chew dominate possession but they just weren’t able to penetrate the Winscombe defence. Whilst the Chew forwards won plenty of ball in the lose play they kept taking the ball back into the scrum despite there being overlaps in the back line and Chew made little progress. On the few occasions when the backs did get the ball, poor passing wasted some good chances.
Overall, a very disappointing game for Chew. There were a few key players missing for this game, but Chew should still have come out on top if they had made better use of the possession they had in the second half. There was a lot of hard work put in by a number of players including Kyle Cording, Sam Wedlake, Sam Burtenshaw and Perry Cunio and it was good to see Perry Cunio being named man of the match. We hope to see more of him in the matches to come.
