History - Senior Club History

Chichester Rugby Football Club was founded in 1926.

This season will be the 85th Anniversary of the Club and the 65th anniversary of the Club playing in Oaklands Park. It is also the 35th Anniversary of the Mini and Junior section. This large tree lined park is situated to the north of the City and is one of the most picturesque Rugby locations in the South East, with fine views of the City, Cathedral and the world famous Chichester Festival Theatre. The modern Clubhouse faces onto the 1st XV pitch which is recognised as one of the finest pitches in Sussex. To help locate the ground click the following link to the Clubhouse Location.

Chichester is a city with many historical connections especially its Roman origins and Georgian background. Today the City is growing at a rapid rate hosting many local and international businesses together with a traditional agricultural industry. This linked to the Club's connections with local schools, via our Mini & Junior section,Chichester College of FE, Chichester University and other further education establishments provides a sound base for player recruitment.

The Club also has a long tradition of welcoming a limited number of players from the Southern hemisphere. Connections with local business have enabled us to provide work and accommodation for these players.

The Club has just completed another successful season

The Club currently play in London & SE League : London 1 South. They finished in 3rd place last season narrowly missing promotion after an exciting battle with London Irish Amateurs for 2nd place.

The 1st team also beat Brighton RFC in the final of the Sussex Trophy to become Sussex Champions. This is the fourth time that they have been in the final winning it also in 2008/2009.

They played some outstanding Rugby last season and we are very hopeful of an even better season this year. It is well worth coming to support the team. All fixtures are on this website.

Our 2nd XV ( Development XV ) currently play in the Solent League. They were outstanding winners last season losing only one game. The League has been strengthened this year with Newbury 2nd XV joining. This League will provide an excellent standard rugby for our 2nd XV.

The Development XV were also winners of the Sussex Spifire Bowl beating Lewes 2nd XV in the final.

The 3rd XV ( Gladiators ) won their Sussex Intermediate League last season and will play in Sussex Division 1 this year. This is the same league that our 1st XV were playing in not so many years ago.

The 4th XV ( Hunns ) Play in the Sussex 2 West League and finished in the top third.

Due to strength in players, last season we ran a 5th XV ( Barbarians ) with a full fixture list in the Sussex "Late Red' League 3 West.

To support 5 senior sides we will continue with the existing and successful coaching structure that has bought success at all levels in recent years . Paul Colley, Director of Rugby and Richard Isaac, Head Coach, will manage the coaching team. Currently we are the second strongest 1st team in Sussex behind Worthing and the strongest club overall which is a testament to this coaching set-up.

We will continue our links to University College Chichester, this continues to be a major success and we have seen an increase in the playing strength at all levels within the Club.

RFU Seal of Approval

In December 2004 Chichester RFC were delighted to be awarded the 'RFU Seal of Approval', a standard of excellence for the coaching and administration of Mini and Junior rugby. At that time Chichester was the 21st Club in the country to receive this prestigious award. The success of the Mini & Junior section was again recognised by Sport England who in December 2005 named the Club as 'the best youth sports club in Sussex'. We were successful in renewing the seal of approval in 2007. This season we are applying for the RFU Seal of Approval for the "Whole' Club. Under the watchful eye of Dan Munro we are close to achieving it.

Chichester RFC offers Rugby for all ages, from Mini / Junior, with over 500 players, to Colts and five senior teams. In addition the Club welcomes a large number of non players to Oakland Park every Saturday during the season. Pre-game lunches and other social events are a regular feature and details are listed on our Social page.
