Chi expected a stern battle this weekend when facing Portsmouth and that was what they got!
Chi struck on the 20min mark with 18 year old Danny Kirkpatrick slotting a nice penalty, however it was a lack of concentration that let portsmouth stright back in. with 2 big fijian lads playing 12 and 13 they ran the ball hard, got the outside break and put the winger in out wide. 7-3 24mins.
This part of the game saw the most points, Josh Hutchinson opened his personal scoring tally with a nicely taking break. He was fed the ball out wide and ran in from 50m. The young 13 made another BIG break 4 mins later with almost a carbon copy run in. Both conversions were missed from wide against the win but the spartans seemed to be in their stride.
The young pack had a hard job. Lineouts were OK, but scrum time was difficult so set piece ball was hard to come by. By the time the 2nd half came pompey had the physical edge.
This carried on throughout the 2nd half. Uta and stride coming off with injuries that could trouble the last part of the season. It was the constant forward pressure that told again, and a big carry by the pompey 12 and a quick recycle of the ball saw the prop (standing wide and out the way) flop over the line. Pomepy were in the driving seat and the last 10mins were going to be tough! 12-16 70mins.
Chi held out for the last period of play though, and although Pompey posed a threat, it was young backrow Charlie Wallace
(17) who got the turnover on the final whistle. the ball was knocked on and the final whistle went. Very pleasing for Coach Taylor and the boys were exhausted but happy.
Average age of the side was 21 so this sets the club up in good stead for the years to come.
Break for Easter next week, but a huge fixture at home v Basingstoke on the 14th April for the penultimate game of the season. 22nd April sees the cup final being played at Hove v Worthing on sunday the 22nd. The 2's would like to wish all those involved in the squad for the cup semi final for the 1s on Wednesday the best of luck, hopefully people will make the effort to go and watch!
