Training

All in all a good session building to our first game a Salisbury.

Firstly and very importantly Oscar is going to be ok. Pete and Vic were In St Richards with him very quickly and getting the right treatment.

Oscar will have a rather nice scar for a few months but it will not affectt his handsome good looks! With any injury like this there will be a period of recovery, let's hope that Oscar is back playing with the squad soon.

Tom H was also a little groggy after the game and joined Oscar at St Richards. He too may have mild concussion and will also have to have a staggered return to sport and rugby.

Injurys can be part of the game and demonstrate both the boys commitment at the ruck. I'm sure you will all join me in wishing them both a speedy recovery.

On a positive note our procedures for dealing with injury worked well with all coaches playing their roles perfectly. Must remember to ensure that first aid kit is replenished.

I would also like to welcome Sam to the coaching team. Sam is in her final year at Chichester Universtiy and will be adding her expertise to our little team. I also understand that she is doing some work with the first team this season. Perhaps we can learn something from them.

Today was a first for many reasons. Last week Steve sent out our vision for the season with clear training programs and structures. I am pleased to say that all the coaches read and digested the plan and executed it as required.

Starting in the club house a game structure was mapped out. Whilst it is not overly complicated it will take time for all to digest and execute. With 40 minute games we must have a plan this season!

Warm up as usual with Simon then into some drills.

Working on two types of defence, blitz and drift. Two drills that emphasise the working of both were carried out. Sadly defence is not very exciting but is a vital part of the game these days and will play a very important part of our game plan this season. Although attack can be chaotic defence is all about keeping a tight line and not allowing the opposition space to play in. We will keep working on this week on week.

Tommo then took on some rucking practise splitting the boys into groups looking at winning the ball or securing the ball in defence. All the boys grasped this very well. It is a part of the game that the forwards enjoy but does take some skill at our new level.

Then followed a game of one half. In that we played attack and defence on a half pitch. The boys struggled at first with the concept but soon got to grips with the format. We need to get the boys used to following a plan for wherever they are on the pitch. Attacking and defending in either the red or green zone. A few early injurys but in my opinion some good plays.

As a group of coaches what is still becoming clear to us all is the need for harder work by the forwards. We need them to get from ruck to ruck quickly sometimes this may be at the other side of the pitch, we're back to fitness again. It will come but we wil keep reminding the boys of this. I have said it before " it's a dogs life in the forwards"

Warm down will be done every week now so please be patient at end of session.

All in all a good session building to our first game a Salisbury.

See you all next week.
