Chichester City 2-1 Hassocks

Chichester players celebrate Scott Jones' goal (Picture: Olivia Ellis)

First half goals from Scott Jones and Gicu Iordache helped send Chi through to the next round of the SCFA Senior Cup against Hassocks.

Ant Ender started in place of the injured Jordan Matthews in goal. Terrell Lewis came in at right back, with Steve Herbert on the other side and Ryan Peake partnered captain Connor Cody in the centre of the City defence.

The Oaklands Park outfit beat Hassocks 6-0 in their second league game of the season at the Beacon in a score line that probably flattered them and the visitors gave Miles Rutherford's a stern test in this cup tie.

There were chances at both ends in the early stages of the game. Ender flapped at a cross from a corner in the seventh minute. Then Peake got a header on a Matt Axell free-kick that was turned out before Iordache made Hassocks keeper Josh Green work.

A slip from Herbert gave Hassocks a corner moments later but he made amends heading this away.

Jones broke the deadlock with his third goal in two games from close range on 27 minutes.

Dan Stokes and Lorenzo Dolcetti both tried their luck from distance before a super Liam Benson header beat Ender to level things following an excellent delivery from the left as City conceded only the fifth goal at home this season in all competitions.

Hassocks might have taken the lead but an unmarked Jake Lindsay headed over and three minutes later Stokes missed a glorious chance when a through ball split the Chi back four apart only for the No.8 to flick an effort just wide of the upright.

Rob Hutchings next had a shot blocked before City went ahead again when Iordache’s drive was too hot to handle for Green on the stroke of half-time.

HT 2-1

Jones blazed a shot over the bar just after the restart.

Next James Littlejohn gave Ender something to think about and the Chi keeper did well to gather as Harvey Blake cut in from the left and had a go.

Man of the Match Axell brushed the top of the bar with a nicely struck free-kick before a shot on the turn from Kieran Hartley cannoned off Green and inches away from fellow sub Tiago Andrade.

Hutchings almost picked out Andrade in Chi’s next attack and Iordache went close with two attempts, the second the result of a fine piece of skill.

Blake then almost turned the ball into his own net after Hutchings got in but it crashed off the woodwork.

On 80 minutes Lewis drove into the Hassocks box only to shoot over.

Chichester might have extended their lead when Hartley pulled a save out of Green with a fierce strike after Andrade teed him up.

Cody went close seconds later and Axell’s shot was parried by the impressive Green who had a good night in the Hassocks goal. The visitors’ keeper also did well to deny Iordache and Hutchings again in the dying moments.

The match might have gone to extra time but sub Phil Johnson spurned a golden opportunity and lifted the ball over the crossbar with the goal gaping.

Chi, the country’s highest scoring Step 5 side, are back in league action on Saturday 6th October at Little Common (Kick Off 3pm).
