Otters deserve victory in hard fought game

Report by Steve Price.

This was a frustrating result for Chi who were looking to build on the momentum of the inspiring final 10 minutes enjoyed in last week's match. Chi and Otters have had some good games over the years and whilst this was no exception Chi were disappointed not to have given the away 'keeper a more testing time. To the credit of both sides there was some really good football to be enjoyed here.

The first few minutes were fairly even but the best chance was Chi's, Price unable to convert Leonard's cross. Otters responded by forcing a couple of corners which were both swung in to the 6-yard box, one chance being headed over. As Otters found their stride Chi had to be alert, and in separate attacks first Robinson and then Simmons showed admirable strength and anticipation to break up attacks. With about 10 minutes gone Chi had possession in midfield and were in control. There was no shout of 'man on' with the result that Chi had their pockets picked, possession was lost, the ball was swept out to the left and then back to the right from where an attacker was able to steer his shot past Thorn.

Mid-way through the half Thorn was back in action coming to the rescue to smother and claim a ball that was ricocheting round the 6-yard box. It was hotting up in midfield with Daley and Martin in particular showing the necessary fight. The wind was getting up and was against Chi, perhaps it would help in the second half. The main plus as we went to the interval was the very welcome return from injury of Buckingham-Rhyder.

The second half was hard fought but a bit of an anti-climax for Chi who despite rotating their attackers couldn't create a clear opening. Otters' second goal was a result of their man not being picked up in midfield, Thorn did well to race out and make the initial save but the rebound was easily stroked in. The goal came at a disappointing moment as Chi, now with White playing centrally, were making some headway. The third goal had similar origins to the second, the positions were different but the cause the same, namely a failure to track the runner.

At the whistle Chi knew they had played their part in a good match - hard fought with some neat composed play from both sides. Ultimately Otters were deserving of the points the difference being that they were a little more alert and lively on the day, thin margins but enough to see them take the spoils. We look forward to next week boosted by the return of Buckingham- Rhyder and hopefully of Gallop too. Come on Chi!

Team: Thorn, Good, Robinson, Simmons, Fellick, Martin, Daley, Leonard, Bennetts, White, Price, Brennan, Buckingham-Rhyder.
