QPR Ladies 1 - 1 Chichester City Ladies

Game of frustrations compounds pressure on Chichester

Chichester City Ladies endured more frustration, this week, after only being able to come away with a solitary point from a trip to Uxbridge FC to take on a struggling QPR side that are caught in the midst of a relegation battle themselves and will certainly rue the catalogue of missed opportunities that seemed to be a mirror image of their last time out against Plymouth Argyle.

With Lauren Cheshire missing the formation was altered a little by the management with Alex Collighan starting up front and Chloe Tucker taking up the centre half role with Laura Ingram deputising at right back. The game was only a few minutes old when the green army were hit with a blow to the solar plexus as QPR took a shock lead through their striker, Amanda Chimbima. A quick ball over the top caused panic at the back and Dominika Netschova took advantage to get in on goal. Poppy Shine made an excellent save but could only parry the effort into the poaching Chimbima who pounced to prod the ball home to put the underdogs in front.

Chichester regrouped and minutes later Cherelle Khassal manoeuvred her way through to the by line and an opportunity opened up for an effort on goal. Instead of the ball finding the back of the net the QPR keeper, Gillian Kasirye dived to push the ball to safety to keep the hosts lead intact. Next Tiffany Taylor, having a really strong game down the Chichester right had side drove clear and surged towards the area. Firing a low ball into the danger area Kasirye and Mara Deluca collided but did enough to prevent the poaching Khassal from getting a strike on the ball and the danger was cleared again to the immense frustration of the visitor’s dugout.

The half wore on and Chichester continued to probe and ask all the questions. Some needless offside’s cut short some attacks and wasteful passes also proved costly to the green army’s efforts but the progress was positive and Taylor again went close with a firm header right in front of Kasirye but the keeper did well to block the effort and deny any blemish to the score line. Next Collighan put Jess Lewry in on goal but, alas, here finish was lost as the ensuing effort sailed over the bar and the continuing frustrations started to show on the players faces as the interval fast approached. Close to the break Chichester had the perfect chance to haul themselves level when Khassal was upended in the box and a spot kick as awarded by the referee, Peter Panaylotu. Kerrie Ryan, playing her last game for the green and whites before embarking on a new, great, adventure down under, stepped up but ballooned her effort over the bar from twelve yards.

Chichester were then dealt another blow when Lewry had to be helped from the field, as he half time whistle went, have gone done with an ankle injury, thus Jenna Fowlie was introduced into the fray for the restart and Chichester were immediately on the offensive

and both Khassal and Taylor went close to scoring but the efforts missed the target, either over the bar or sliced wide of the mark. QPR didn’t offer much in attack themselves and seemed to be content to sit back for long periods behind the ball to soak up constant pressure and strive to keep their lead intact.

Something had to give and with barely minutes left of normal time it did. Ryan worked her way into the box from the left and drove a low ball into the danger area. Gemma Simmonds arrived late and got to the ball first and got enough on it to poke it home to finally drag Chichester back level. The visitors pushed on to try and nail a winning goal but time eventually ran out and a frustrated team left the pitch wondering what might have been if their scoring boots had really been on. A trip to Crystal Palace awaits next week and another firm test of the credentials as the adventure of the Southern Division continues at a strong pace and the hope will be that the goals will start to flow again for the, somewhat, beleaguered Chichester side.
