The mantle passes on

Adam Woodliffe, Club Captain for the last 6 years, has stepped down.

In theory, the Club Captain is the players’ representative in club management and helps organise the playing and social affairs of the club. In theory, the role is the link between all the playing sides. In practice, the Club Captain spends most of Friday afternoons and evenings (and Saturday mornings) trying to get out sides for all senior matches below the 1st team level.

Say, a hooker cries off for the 3rds, the club captain must have a contact list long enough to include any one who could possibly play for the club; an unlimited call tariff for his mobile phone; he must have the skills of Ban Ki-moon to negotiate the movement of players between sides without incurring the wrath of team captains and he must be thick skinned. And he must do this every week in the playing season.

Adam has performed all these roles in a quiet, unassuming and very effective way and the club is grateful to his efforts over so many years – possibly the longest tenure for the role. He now gets his Fridays back.

We are pleased to announce Ian Stock as his successor. Ian is a stalwart of the senior sides and a familiar face around the club, especially at the bar! We extend the best of luck to him in his new role
