U 16 - Report
Chippenham U16s vs Old Bristolians
Friendly 19th February 2012
A fantastic performance by Chippenham U16s who score 11 tries and win comfortably.
OB kicked off and early play saw both Teams making and losing ground but it was OB who scored first. On 4 mins they attacked to within the Chippenham 22 when the referee adjudged that there had been a tip tackle. Thankfully no card, but OB scored from the resulting penalty (3-0). What happen over the next 60 mins of play was simply fantastic for the away supporters as Chippenham then ran in 69 (yes, sixty nine) unanswered points with 11 tries scored.
On 6 mins from an OB scrum on the half way line, stand in hooker Chris Day wins it against the head (something that he repeated often), Robert Preece makes ground and good hands through the backs sees Kieran Gibson scoring out left (3-5). On 18 mins Harry Murphy wins a lineout on OB 22m line, which the forwards turn into a great maul but was pulled down short of the line. With a quick tap, Josh Lewis scores and Bradley Doggett converts (3-12). Two more converted tries follow is quick succession direct from the restarts. First Kieran runs in from 40ms to score (3-19), then strong running by Josh through the centre creates a great platform for Jim Hillier (3-26). Where were you Andy!
Chippenham were now controlling all aspects of the game with the scrum and lineout especially dominant. On 29 mins from a series of phases by the forwards James Noble makes a break down the blindside, close to the left wing but is stopped just short. James is able to offload to a charging Charlie Kingsley who scores his first try of the season. (3-33). OB continued to play with pride and end the half strongly but solid defending and a good clearance kick by Robert from the base of a ruck 5m from his own line sees their play breakdown. HT.
Chippenham make a number of changes to their line up for the second half, also OB make a request for uncontested scrums such is Chippenham’s dominance. But despite this Chippenham continue to pressurise the OB line from the start. First Jim is stopped short, then Josh who knocks on. From the resulting OB scrum and clearance kick, Kieran catches and finds space through the centre. A well-timed off load to a speeding Jim sets up the first try of the half, but only after Jim’s little dancing feet have taken him around the OB defensive back line (missed another one Andy!). Oscar Ryan takes over kicking duties and duly converts (3-38).
Chippenham then score a further 5 trys inside a 10 minute spell. On 44 mins Charlie scores his second try, again as a result of great support play, this time from a pass by Robert (3-43). From the kick off, Josh catches well and passes to Kieran finds gaps galore and runs 60m to complete his hat-trick (3-50). Josh then adds his second try following a lineout win on OB 5m line (3-57). From the kick off, prop Jack Crowther, making his first start for Chippenham this season produces what can only be described as a bulldozing run from 60m out to score (3-62). The final try saw Conall Rees scoring after fly half Macaulay Gibbs found a gap through the OB centre. (3-69).
The last 15 mins remained scoreless for Chippenham through a mixture of tiredness, injuries and in fairness a ‘never say die’ attitude by OB. OBs efforts were rewarded with a try on full time following a predictable, but unstoppable pick and drive by their No. 8 from their own uncontested scrum 5m out (10-69).
A great team performance with all players contributing in equal measure. In particular the support play in both attack and defence was some of the best produced all season.
Come on Chippers!
