U8's @ Cleve: Sunshine and Sogginess

by

This weekend three teams from the Under 8s took part in the Cleve Festival.

The day started brightly enough, but as the morning sunshine gave way to sogginess a whole new meaning was added to the term ‘pool’ game! Despite this the boys remained in good spirits and the weather failed to dampen their enthusiasm.

First up were the ‘Yellows’ against Nailsea and Backwell, a game which Chippenham won by a three point margin. Next they faced St Brendans, tremendous teamwork and defensive discipline saw the boys run in seven unanswered tries. Cleve in the next match, as expected, proved to be much tougher opposition, both teams played with determination resulting in a close draw for Chippenham against the hosts. The final pool game against Avonmouth was easily won with an impressive margin. The ‘Yellows’ topped their group jointly with the Cleve, however failed to progress to the finals due to the ‘total number of tries scored’ rule.

The other two teams, the 'Blues' and the 'Greens' were drawn in same the pool and the opening match was Chippenham versus the Chippenham, a game the ‘Blues’ won. The ‘Blues’ then notched up a draw their second game against a spirited side from St Brendans. Next they faced opposition from further afield in the form of Llandaff who had travelled from Cardiff. This was a very tight game and on the final whistle neither team had managed to press an advantage. The ‘Blues’ worked hard in their final pool game where great interplay and tremendous tagging enabled them to overcome the Stockwood Sharks and earned themselves a place in the finals playoff.

The ‘Greens’ were unfortunate in their second pool a game against the Stockwood Sharks, trailing by four tries at half time the boys put in a determined performance and managed to pull level but were narrowly beaten in the dying seconds of the game. Next they faced St Brendans , Chippenham played with tenacity in a closely fought game which went down to wire but ended in a stale mate. The boys rallied in their last match and put in a solid performance which saw them beat Llandaff by a three tries.

The ‘Blues’ went through to play in a three way playoff to decide the tournament. By this time the rain had firmly set in making for tough playing (and spectator) conditions. Despite playing well the opening bout against Cleve ended in defeat for Chippenham. Next up were a very physical side from Clifton. Undeterred the boys stood firm and refused to be fazed by the opposition, but despite digging deep the ‘Blues’ narrowly lost and finished in third place overall.

The Cleve festival is always a toughie with lots of strong teams participating. Every boy played really well, in what were difficult conditions, and each one deserves praise for their effort and performance - through the sunshine and sogginess the boys did us proud!
