U8's Close Encounter with Cleve

by Matt Viner

Following a couple of weeks enforced break due to the icy conditions this weekend welcomed Cleve RFC to Allington Fields.

Historically Cleve have proved to be testy opposition so the clash provided an opportunity to measure the Mighty Under 8s true potential. A good turnout enabled both squads to field two teams making for a good morning of tag rugby.

The recent cancellation of training sessions was showing through in Chippenham’s handling and tagging abilities but despite this the Under 8s looked disciplined and well organised if a little messy and error prone at times.

The two opening fixtures were a spectacle of nip and tuck rugby, reflecting the abilities of both clubs, however Chippenham’s perseverance was rewarded as both teams notched up narrow victories. This continued into the next round of matches which yielded a draw and a tight win for the Mighty Under 8s. The final round of matches saw improved handling from Chippenham cumulating in another close win and an impressive victory in the last match.

After a stilted start, by the end of the morning Chippenham had managed to shake off the rust that had set in over the break and were back playing as a well oiled machine.
