Chippenham U12’s played their last rugby as minis over the weekend.

While the rest of the minis went to the West Coast festival at Barnstaple the U12’s went on their 1st official tour after a season of fund raising. I’m sure the other Wiltshire side in the U12’s at Barnstaple would have sighed with some relief that Chippenham were not present to spoil their party!!!!

Chippenham Gladiators went to celebrate the fantastic season they have had and celebrate they did. With activities fun, tour rules, no sleep and of course some rugby the boys and girls signed off in style.
After meeting at the club and some tea it was off on the coach to Okehampton where our home was to be for the weekend. The theme for the weekend was Roman Gladiators.

After settling down on Friday night (eventually) the team rose on Saturday morning for a trip to Sandy Park to play Exeter Chiefs. We were fortunate enough to be able to use the 4G training pitch which was fantastic and you would hardly notice that it was artificial. After a warm up the games got under way.

A quick game on half the pitch as a warm up. Chippenham winning 28 – 7. Then it was agreed to play 15 a side and full pitch. This is where Chippenham turned on the style and used the full length and width of the pitch running in 6 tries with only one scored against and that was by a loanee Chippenham player Conner Beer as Chiefs had a couple of injuries. Final score 42 – 7.

Then the squad went off to Paignton to Splashdown and the waterpark. What a laugh. It was cold but this didn’t stop the boys & girls enjoying themselves and in fact some of the parents also joining in. But what goes on tour stays on tour!!! That evening it was the Kangaroo court with the players getting their just desserts!!! But as I say “WGOTSOT”!!! Thanks go to Exeter for being such good hosts and playing in the right spirit with smiles and respect for both sides.

Sunday and the team were again up and off to play the Cornish All Blacks, Launceston. Not sure what goes into the pasties in “Lanson” but this was a big team. Again we played 15 a side to give everyone a chance to get some game time. We played on the firsts pitch and Chippenham didn’t disappoint. Running in tries from all over the park and playing some of the best rugby they have played all season, it bodes well for next season when they do play on bigger pitches and 15 a side.

The referee even commenting on how well they played with great running on and off the ball and how the lines were maintained. He could not believe that Chippenham had not played on bigger pitches more often such was the style of play. The forwards were quick to the breakdowns. The backs were spreading the ball wide and running straight at the opposition saw some lovely rugby. Chippenham running out winners 43 – 5.

A great sense of pride from the coaches, parents and supporters of Chippenham applauded this great set up of players. And I’m sure we gained a couple more supporters from our Cornish hosts!!! After a little break it was a game of touch between the parents. A really good laugh and this saw the hosts taking the game 2 – 1. Maybe the parents should take some coaching from the kids!!! After some great hospitality from Launceston it was back onto the bus and off for some surfing lessons. The balance of some was to be admired!!! And the efforts!! Though, of note was Joe Tingey who never gave up and was determined to beat the waves.

Monday morning saw the squad taking part in some team building exercises as they went raft building. Team building some will say is not necessary as this group are a brilliant team and look after each other!! But the added factor was a race against the dads who also built a raft. A great laugh and lots of antics going on but “WGOTSOT”.
This group of players have done Chippenham RFC really proud. They represented the club well.

Next week sees the end of season awards and then it is a rest for the summer. The boys moving on to Junior rugby with bigger pitches and full 15 a side and the girls going on to play junior rugby with a girls team.

A fantastic season closes and some thanks must go out. To Sue for organising things as team manager. Then the coaches led by Matt Selman. Jim Clements, Nick Tilley, Nick Hathaway, James McKenzie and Danny Kitts. They really have coached the team well and deserve the success they have had this season. Great big thanks from the parents and it is appreciated. It’s not an easy job and there is a lot of planning in the background that is not always evident. Our thanks to all the coaches.

A final thanks for the tour. Nicki Lever having done a brilliant job throughout the season fund raising, and organising every last detail of the tour ensured the team did not have a spare moment. Thanks must go to Exeter Chiefs and Launceston who hosted us on tour and of course Sarah Clark for finding these great hosts and arranging the games. Finally a great big huge amount of thanks to the players for making all the parents so proud of what you have achieved this season, each and every one of you can hold your heads up high.

Good luck to you all for the coming season which as I say looks to be so promising. Have a good rest and I will refill the pen ready for next season to continue writing about the successes of Chippenham U13’s. It is so easy to write about the team when they play such wonderful rugby that is pleasing to the eye and gets the rewards it deserves.
