Chippenham do the double over Bassett
Chippenham upset the apple-cart in this local derby at Allington Field
After defeat at Reading Abbey last week and Royal Wootton Bassett coming off the back of two victories, Chippenham were looking to upset the apple-cart in this local derby at Allington Field.
Chippenham started the game well, going through the phases, starving Bassett of the ball and opened the scoring after 5 minutes, a wide pass was collected by Matt Dickens who sliced through the defence unopposed.
Defence was on top for the rest of the half as neither side breached the others line. Bassett got themselves on the score board with 2 penalties before the break.
Half time 5-6.
Chippenham knew that by sticking to the game plan in the second half, the fruits of their efforts would be rewarded.
The first score of the second half came just after half time, after a quick tap penalty close to the line, the ball made its way to veteran skipper Ryan Surry who pushed his way over. Dom Riccio adding the conversion.
It was Surry again who touched down next, spotting a gap in the defensive line and rounding the full back for a peach of a try under the posts. Riccio adding the easy extras.
Hooker John Turner was next in the lime-light as Chippenham built through the phases to create the overlap to allow Turner to stroll over in the corner. Riccio converting again.
Things went pear shaped for Bassett as directly from the restart, back row Sam Saunders ran the ball back through the tiring Bassett defence, over the 10m line and expertly chipped the ball over the full back for Matt Dickens to gather and cross for his second score of the afternoon. The try gave the opportunity for the assembled ex players to go bananas on the side line. Riccio adding the extras.
Aaron Clarke was next on the score sheet after a strong run from Brad Doggett, Chippenham patiently went through the phases for No 8 Clarke to peel off the back of a ruck to touch down close to the posts to give Riccio another easy conversion.
Bassett hit back with a try under the posts which they converted but there was still time for Chippenham to put the cherry on the cake with a final try and hat trick score from Ryan Surry, Riccio again converting.
Full Time 47-13.
