Chippenham finish with a win
An anxious Chippenham team took to the field on Saturday. Playing Windsor who were two points below Chippenham in the last relegation position. The last game of the season, the team knew that the winner would get to stay in this league and the loser would be going down.
A very tense start to the game, with defence high on the Agenda. A penalty from Saunders gave the home team a slim 3-0 lead. Chippenham grew into the game and a trademark power Try from Doggett, converted by Saunders, took a little pressure off the Chippenham players.
A penalty to Windsor gave the score at the half 10-3. The game, very even, had a long way to go.
Windsor started strong in the second half and came away with a converted Try. The score now level at 10-10. Another long period of defence from both sides kept the crowd on the edge of their seat as the end of the game approached. Had the game end level, and unlikely result, Chippenham would stay in the division.
A period in the Windsor twenty-two saw Fogerty snipe over for a Try under the posts, conversion by Saunders. Chippenham began to lok to the finish line. A long penalty, well struck by the Windsor kicker, took the score to 17-13. Time was up and the referee was playing out the time lost on injuries. The Chippenham defence dropped its guard and Windsor were through, with a two on one. Surely, that was it. A forward pass, a knock on, the home team began to breathe again. The referee blew for time and Chippenham live to fight another day in South West One.
Final Score 17-13. A good rest and we go again next season.
The celebrations after the game were helped by the side’s victory on Wednesday at the REC. Against Midsomer Norton in the Bath Combination Cup, Chippenham ran out 43-12 winners.
