Chippenham continue winning run
Chippenham carry on their winning ways with another brilliant five point win over Grove by 44-19.
The first score of the day came from the visitors. Grove broke the home defensive line with their full back and recycled the ball quickly to score in the corner. The conversion was good giving the home team a real wake up call.
Chippenham eventually put pressure into points and got on to the score board with three points from Dominic Riccio (sponsored by Stonewood Builders). Chippenham continued to apply a lot of pressure by retaining the ball but could not make the break through they deserved due to a strong defence from Grove. The pressure soon told and Grove were further tested with a yellow card for a dangerous tackle. The pressure finally paid off as Jacob Unwin (sponsored by John Gillespie) scored a try in the corner. This was quickly followed up with some with silky hands opening up space for Will Waddington ( Sponsored by Old school) to score and Dominic Riccio added the extra to get Chippenham 15-7 just before half time. Chippenham attempted to get another opportunity at scoring but Grove discipline was once again poor and cost them territory but no reward for Chippenham. Heading into half time at the score at 15-7 to the home team.
Into the second half and Chippenham came out the blocks firing and straight away earned themselves a scrum twenty metres out from the Grove try line. After a number of patient phases and line breaks, Ed Hendy (Sponsored by Hendy livestock) put in a barn storming run bulldozing over numerous defenders to score what was the try of the day.
The home team were once again straight on the attack from the restart but again, indiscipline cost Grove and the referee’s patience was wearing thin. A solid set piece offered the three quarters the chance to Brad Doggett (Sponsored by James Long builders) to find some space and be able to break four or five tackles and end up in the corner to gain Chippenham the try bonus point.
The flood gates were starting to open in Groves' defence and some very fluent open attacking play from forwards and backs interlinking, set up quick ball for Tom Fogerty to sell a massive dummy and snipe near the ruck to score under the posts. This took the score to 32-12 in favour of the home team. The extras being added from Lewis Surry (Sponsored by Meadows Plumbing and Heating)
The end of the scoring came from two very well worked tries - the first one coming from Lewis Surry breaking from his own half and putting in a very well measured kick that allowed Charlie Palmer (Sponsored by John Gillespie) to show off his footballing skills and get on the score sheet.
The final try came when Dominic Riccio finished a great build up showing the defence a clean pair of heels - he also added the 2 points with a successful conversion.
The visitors finished off their scoring with a try from the line out catch and drive but this never made any difference to the result and the match ended 44-19 to Chippenham .
Chippenham’s 1st XV now have a break for a week until they resume with an away clash at Marlow RFC.
