Match Report - Old Centralians 37-33 Chippenham
Chip lose out in final minute after cracking game at Old Cents. Match report courtesy of Mr Dan Carter
With the weather dryer than on previous weeks, the top half clash between Chippenham and Old Cents promised to be an exciting encounter and so it was!
Chippenham unfortunately returned home with only the two bonus points from an exciting game that included three yellow cards and ten tries.
Old Cents began the game exerting pressure on their visitors, fencing Chippenham in their own 22m area. This was compounded when Chippenham gave away penalties allowing the clinical Cents to score their first try of the day with some strong forward carrying via a well worked driving lineout. 7-0
Chippenham’s response was slow burning, though eventually resulted with centre Jacob Unwin powering through putting the boys in red 5-7 up. However, after a well converted 3 pointer and a scrum penalty try, the lead was handed back to the Centralians. 15-7
The following restart was returned to Chippenham’s fullback, Will Waddington, who sniped his way through several tackles with eventually just his opposite number to beat. Waddington span the ball to Tom 'RB' Fogarty who was in close support and finished the well worked move in the left corner. 15-14 The final act of the half came from a chaotic few seconds with a bit of pinball action combined some quick thinking from halfback Dan Wainwright and loud celebrations from captain, Ryan Surrey. Wainwright’s conversions, took the tally at the half to 15-19 in favour of the visitors.
The second half began like the first: a well-worked Centralian try, though this time after spinning the ball across the width of the pitch. 22-19 The response from CRFC was solid.
Long periods of strong forward carrying from Chip put the Cents on their back feet. Explosive lines from second-rowers Aaron Ascott and Andy Rossiter had the defence turning and eventually Number 8, Sam Saunders picked up another score for himself and the bonus point for Chippenham. 22-26 - the lead once again being transferred back to the away side.
This was short lived - Old Centralians replied with an excellent try from some rapid footwork. This was followed with an extended period of possession for the leaders and probably to the relief of the Chippenham players - just a penalty, bringing the score to 30-26. Composed carrying up the field from Chippenham meant steady territory gains.
Then, after excellent handling, Matt Dickens scored in the corner with only minutes to spare bringing it to 30-33. “Handbags” ensued after the try, and each team was docked a player for those final few minutes. The composed Centralians were unphased by being deep in their own half and marched up their field - whether through running or penalties. A final lineout was awarded and their trademark set piece proved priceless for Old Cents who powered over the line taking the lead and also the win - 37-33 to Old Centralians.
Next week is another break, however, following that we’ll see current league leaders Old Patesians travel down to Allington Fields for what should be a very entertaining and competitive match!
