Four weeks ago sitting 6th in the National 3 South West League playing good Rugby Chippenham were showing they meant business and had grown as a club since their last visit to National 3. However the last month, Bournemouth game apart has seen the side struggle to play with the pride and passion that had seen the side deliver an exciting brand of Rugby.
Last saturday saw Chippenham play a Newbury side who played as their lives depended on the outcome of the game and full credit to Newbury Blues, they played a brand of Rugby that was of a side who where mid table and not bottom of the league.
Chippenham went in front after 16 mins when young winger Matt Rhodes went over for his first ever Chippenham 1st team try. Five mins later Newbury hit back to level the scores. Chris Simmons kicked a penalty on 34 mins, a lead that Chippenham failed to keep, as on half time Chippenham conceeded another try to see Newbury go into half time 10-8 in front.
Despite coming on of the blocks to start the 2nd half in positive manner, Newbury went further in front with a converted try.Chippenham hit back through man of the match Tom Baldwin who broke through the Newbury defence. Chris Simmons converted. The score saw Chippenham take the game to Newbury for the first time, Chris Fletcher then went over for Chippenham's 3rd try, Chris Simmons again converting. Newbury 17 v Chippenham 22. Chippenham now had the opportunity to go on and finish the game off. However they failed to capitalise and instead of closing the game out, Newbury ran the ball from deep to score in injury time, to secure their first win of the season.
