Chippenham win 40-0 vs Cleve RFC
Back to winning ways in some style
This was a performance from the Chippenham U14 boys that put right everything that had been missing in the losses to Devizes and St Peters. As ever, Cleve were tough opponents - much stronger than the score suggests - but overall Chippenham were just a bit better in every department.
Conditions were windy and damp on the first pitch. The warm up hadn't been especially promising. Cleve looked strong. How would this go?
As it turned out, this was going to be a typical, blitz start by Chip - longish kick, good chase, forward pressure, hot ball out to the backs. Try 5-0. Converted 7-0.
Chippenham gave away a lot of penalties, but Cleve weren't able to score thanks to good Chippenham defence, and spending most of the first half in Cleve territory.
Another try followed before half time to leave the score at 12-0.
The second half produced a total of four tries, all converted. The first was a magnificent solo effort to chase down their restart, nab the ball and score under the posts, converted for 19-0. The second was a forward pick off the back of a scrum, converted for 26-0. The third another forward try up the middle made by determination, converted for 33-0, and the fourth was a textbook 'hot ball' move well finished, converted with a drop kick as the wind got the better of the place kick attempt 40-0.
