Warminster 2s vs Chippenham 3s Nov 17th 2018

Constant pressure but no return for the Gentleman!

Warminster 2s vs Chippenham 3s Nov 17th 2018

So as is now becoming the norm Captain Wheeler was scrapping around for players all week, and due to a few unavailability’s including the skipper himself when wheeler handed the little black book over to stand in skipper Harding it had 13 names down! Or did it??

Harding took over late on Friday night, and after a few last minute Whatsapps the team was set at...... 13 players!! Come on Eddie stop playing England games when the Gentleman 3s are playing!

Saturday morning came, 12.45pm was the meet time… the players stated to arrive.. but not all! We were down to 12! Someone was at work! (thanks for confirming Wheeler) After some gentle arm bending and some light bulling Sam from the bars husband Chris Hawkins went home to get his kit. Big Thanks to Chris for stepping up!

The 13 warriors then set off to Warminster. 2.30pm kick off so it was decided to meet at Warminster at 2pm. Plenty of time to get changed and to warm up. After all the Gentleman 3s are superior athletes.

Harding won the toss, and decided to kick and play into the sun for the first half. Thinking that the setting sun in the second half would hinder Warminster. Whilst the toss was happening Harding also managed to borrow a Warminster player, big thanks to Nick.

The Game started 14 against 15 (and a few subs)

Warminster struck first with a well-executed try, but then the 3rds woke up and started to play. Unfortunately though after spending over 20 minutes in Warminster’s 22 we came away with nothing! Constant pressure, constant possession, and a few knock ons! Was it the sun??

7-0 almost half time, but then a small mistake from Chippenham allowed Warminster to score again.

14-0 at half time.

After a motivational team talk from stand in captain Harding, the second half was under way.
Second half same story to the first, continued pressure from the front 5 of Preston, New boy AJ, Harding along with Dunn and Scads in the second row… best front 5 of the season???

Great defence from the backline, including Hawkins who made a great try saving tackle. Not bad for a smoker who has never played before! Chris was also getting flanker advise from Hubbard.... god help him!

A brief stoppage in play when back row Doug went down like he was shot, sympathy from from Harding who said "get up Doug, you cannot go off" Few minutes rest and back in the game.

Again Chippenham found themselves camped in Warminster’s 22 and again they came away with nothing!

After constant infringements at the breakdown it was time for Harding to explain a few rules to the ref, it helped briefly before the ref found himself at the bottom of a ruck and had to be replaced by the “Bouncer” from Warminster!

More Chippenham pressure continued, again nothing came from it… in the dyeing minutes Warminster finally decided to use the overlap they had all game and scored their 3rd try.

Final score 21-0

Special mentions to the debutantes AJ, Will, and Chris. All three performed massively well, welcome to the Gentleman 3s… enjoy the whatsapp group!

Man of the match = Matt Spurway – mainly for his amazing tacking on two of the watching Warminster VPs.

Next week, there might be a game or more likely there is a VP lunch, see you there.
