Rain doesn’t stop play
Despite the cold and rain the chiefs ran in 7 excellent tries to overcome a stubborn Devizes team
After last weeks postponed fixture,Chippenham arrived at Devizes looking to finish this half of the season strongly. In what was their final group game of the Dorset and Wilts cup Chippenham knew that they needed a big performance from the entire squad. The match couldn’t have started much better as straight from the kick off, Chippenham’s influential number 10, Fin Fielder, gathered the kick and ran the length of the pitch to score Chippenham’s first. The second soon followed when full back Jonny West took a high ball from a Devizes clearing kick and burst through several tackles to score a fantastic solo try. The rest of the half was scrappy with both teams losing discipline and giving away penalties when in dangerous positions. Chippenham did score 2 more tries and Devizes got 1 making the half time score 20 - 5 in Chippenham’s favour.
The second half was much of the same, with Chippenham failing to capitalise on plenty of possession and territory. As the half wore on Chippenham scored a try through their forwards with pick and go from rucks, punching holes in the Devizes defence and giving a gap for Fielder to crash through. The chiefs last 2 tries were the best of the season. Power from the forwards won quick ball for Chippenham to release their backs and with some lovely straight running and crisp handling Theo Malik found himself free to score in the corner. The last try was much the same, Chippenham spinning the ball wide one way, quick ball and a rewind the other way allowed Fielder to put James Lamacraft into space and he scorched in at the corner.
A convincing win for Chippenham and they head into the Christmas break in good spirits. Enjoy the break and come back ready for more of the same in the new year.
