Chippenham show their class
Impressive Chippenham produce best performance of the season.
For the first time as a junior team the Chippenham under 12’s welcomed their Salisbury rivals for a Saturday fixture on pitch 1. There were plenty of nerves and excitement around the squad as they had the use of a changing room for the first time. Salisbury started the strongest with good handling and strong running but the Chippenham defence, led by Fin and Ollie stood firm and defended the gain line as if it were the try line. The pressure defence caused errors in the Salisbury back line, the loose ball fell nicely to a Chippenham player who offloaded to his support runner to get the first try of the game. The second followed soon after with some fine handling putting the winger into space and an easy run to the line. Salisbury were competing well at the breakdown and managed to steal quite a few balls from ruck but they were unable to capitalise on this possession. The first half continued in a similar fashion with the Chippenham forwards winning quick ball and releasing the dangerous back line, they scored 6 further tries, the pick of the bunch was scored by Tom Thornton who hit a perfect line and took a lovely pass from Hugo to scorch in untouched.
The second half started in the same fashion, with Fielder powering over the line early on. Chippenham made a host of changes which appeared to destabilise the team a bit and allowed Salisbury back into the half, conceding 2 quick tries. This appeared to spur Chippenham back into life and the usual pattern of play was re-established. Chippenham finished the game with 3 more well taken tries to leave the final score Chippenham 60 - 10 Salisbury. An excellent all round display from the entire Chippenham squad and a special mention to Warwick Blackmore who had one of the finest black eyes I’ve ever seen.
