Under 8s Cup Semi-finalists and Plate Winners at Wasps
This weekend the Mighty Under 8s travelled to High Wycombe to participate in the Wasps Community Rugby Mini Festival.
The festival was well attended with a number of teams from across the South East of England and enough boys made the journey from Allington Fields to enable Chippenham to field two strong teams in the competition.
The Spitfires opening pool match was against Marlow which they won easily. Next they faced Haywards Heath and an impressive attacking performance from Chippenham secured another victory. The Spitfires final pool match was against High Wycombe - again some excellent team work, with some well engineered moves, reaped dividends. The victory ensured Chippenham topped their qualifying group and secured them a place in the semi-finals where they met Oxford Harlequins. Despite trying hard this game was the sting in the tail for the Spitfires who narrowly lost the match and a place in the Festival Cup Final which was played at Adams Park during the Wasps vs Gloucester premiership game.
The Bombers were entered into a smaller pool, meaning they would have to play each team in their group twice. They kicked off the day with a narrow victory against Aylesford Bulls in their opening fixture. Next they faced Guildford who put in a very strong performance and despite battling bravely the match ended in defeat for Chippenham. Having been beaten by Chippenham in their first encounter the Aylesford Bulls charged at Chippenham from the off during the re-match. A fiercely fought contest ensued but dogged determination from the Bombers secured victory again for Chippenham. In their final pool game the Bombers tried hard but were unable to overcome the eventual Cup finalists Guildford. However as group runners up they had earned a place in the Plate Semi-Final against Rosslyn Park from South West London. An excellent performance from the Bombers resulted in a narrow victory and saw them progress to the Plate Final. A superb team effort, with the Spitfires roaring from the sidelines, resulted in a convincing win against a High Wycombe and more silverware for the Mighty Under 8s trophy cabinet.
After the festival the boys went to watch the Wasps vs Gloucester match and during half time the Bombers went on to the pitch at Adams Park to be awarded the Plate Trophy.
Everyone, Under 8s and parents alike, all had a fantastic day and a big thank you goes to coaches Tom and Tim for organising this special trip.
