Close call v Corsham!
Written by: Rich Blyth
On a cold & grey Sunday morning the Chippenham Destroyers & Rockets welcomed Corsham to Allington Field for a series of matches. A special thank you goes to William and Oskar for agreeing to play for Corsham thus giving us four teams of seven. After a short training session it was time play some matches.
The Chippenham Destroyers started their first match against Corsham B team in what turned out to be quite a physical affair, clearly Corsham are already starting preparations for the introduction of contact next season! Some great running from Keir, Angus, Joshua & Ed allowed the Destroyers to keep ahead of Corsham ending the first half leading 6 -3. During the half-time break there were some further words of encouragement from the coaches, stressing the need for each player to stay in their defensive channels. It seemed to work, a more organised defence allowed the Destroyers to force a series of turnovers after the 6th tag. While in attack, some excellent support play from Ethan, Alfie & Sam allowed the Destroyers to widen the gap. Corsham never gave up coming back with some great breaks & support play allowing them to double their try count during the second half. Final score Destroyers 11 – Corsham B 6. Destroyer try scorers: Joshua (2), Sam (2), Ethan (1), Ed (3), Keir (1) & Angus (2). A great attacking performance & some good defensive effort from all of the Destroyers.
Two great quotes from this well contested tag match....”coach, you told me to take him out!” & “tackle him, no, sorry I meant tag him!”. Given the evidence of this match, Corsham will definitely be well prepared for the introduction of contact next season. Well done to both teams.
While the Destroyers were playing their first match, the Rockets, captained by Charlie, were taking the field against the Corsham A team. Some good handling & running skills from the Rockets especially Charlie, Jessica & Iori allowed the Rockets to keep in touch with Corsham in the early stages of the match. Whilst the Rockets looked good in attack, their defence had a few gaps. Some great all round play from Corsham allowed them to exploit the Rockets defensive frailties to edge ahead on tries, widening the gap further during the second half. The match ended Corsham 9 – Rockets 4, a great effort by both teams. Everyone on the Rockets should be very proud of their endeavours.
After a short refreshment break it was time for the Destroyers to take on the Corsham A team, & the Rockets to take on the Corsham B team.
With some pre-match encouraging words from their coaches, the Rockets started this match with some determined tagging from Jessica, Jack & Alex, the team were holding their defensive line to really good affect. Coupled with some good attacking play from Zack, James, Iori & Charlie the Rockets were able to keep the scores close into the early stages of the second half. A combination of fatigue & some improved play from Corsham allowed them to score a couple of tries in quick succession. The match ended Corsham B 9 - Rockets 6. A good effort by the Rockets, definitely showing improvements from their earlier match, well done.
The last time the Destroyers met Corsham A, at the Keynsham festival, Corsham were the victors edging it 7 – 5, as such the Destroyers were keen to do well. Some top-drawer defensive play from both teams forced a number of turnovers on the after the 6th tackle. The defensive stalemate was broken by a quick breakaway from Corsham with some excellent support play resulting in the first try of the match. The Destroyers came back almost straight away, a great break from Joshua, support from Keir then a pass to Ed to score in the corner made it 1-1. Now it was the Destroyers turn to put on the pressure. From a turnover, Alfie made a break up the middle, Sam was there in support running wide to score a try. Never giving up Corsham came right back, some great penetrating running allowed them to level the score just before half time. The second half started at the same pace, great tagging & support play from both teams. Ethan took the ball in midfield broke through the Corsham defensive line, there in support was Angus to score in the corner. No surprises, Corsham came right back, the Destroyers defensive line got sucked in allowing Corsham an overlap to level once more. With time running out, a break from Angus then a pass to Joshua, who with a great run finished well in the corner. Not to be out done, straight from the kick-off Corsham moved forward again with great support play a Corsham player ran wide of the defence to score in the corner. Final score 4 – 4. A great game of rugby by both teams & played in the right spirit. Well done to both teams, 4 – 4 was a fair result.
All in all some great games of rugby by the Chippenham & Corsham teams, well done to all.
Well done to the Chippenham Players of the Day – Jessica Hallowell & Ed Blyth.
