Great Opening Match for U18 Girls

Chippenham U18 Girls host Kingswood for the first game of the season

Match Report by Johno.

The Chippenham U18’s girls were raring to kick off the season with a win, with the new faces coming up from the U15’s to bolster the team. The game started with Chippenham putting down their marker through good forward work to the speed from the backline, finished off by Poppy going over for the opening try. Jessica’s conversion just short 5-0 Chippenham.
Chippenham were then caught on the hop with a quick start by Kingswood who gathered well and with great speed their backline went under the post and converted. 5-7 Kingswood.

To make amends Chippenham hit straight back with Megan using the space out wide and good speed to go around the defence and score 10-7. Chippenham were caught napping again with a good re-start by Kingswood, good counter rucking freed the ball up for the backline to go over for a good score 10-12 Kingswood.

Chippenham worked hard from the kick off to gain possession and work the ball from right to left. Some good work with pick and go’s and runs by Lani and Ellie. Jessica R this time worked her magic to put Chippenham ahead again, converted by Jessica J. Half time score 17-12.

Due to front row injuries, scrums are uncontested. Both teams worked hard to keep possession and attack the line. Some good jackling by Ellie won Chippenham some good ball. A big hit by Jessica J in the middle of the field gave the ball over to Chippenham. Oumou made some great breaks up the middle and was working hard around the pitch, working well with Jessica J. Megan again used her pace well to go around the outside for a well-deserved score and stretching their lead with Jessica kicking the extras. 24-12 Chippenham.

Chippenham possibly thought they were in the clear now, however, Kingswood had other ideas. Kingswood hotly contesting every ruck and maul with vigour pushing them up the pitch. With good forward and back play the gaps appeared for Kingswood to go over the whitewash. 24-17, Chippenham now had to slow Kingswood down.

The lineout working well for Chippenham with back off the top and the forwards hitting the line with some big carries. Kingswood however, were not going to lie down, counter rucking again gave them the ball. Chippenham’s defence was holding up well with tackles going in left, right and centre. A loose ball gave Chippenham a bit of breathing space with Jessica J hoofing it down the pitch, again Kingswood ran the ball back. Tired bodies were now giving miss matches in the line which gave Kingswood the space they wanted to go over just by the post. Chippenham ran hard at the conversion which did- enough for it to miss. 24-22.

Game on! Kingswood banged away at Chippenham’s line from the off, sniffing another try could be theirs, clock ticking away. Kingswood worked the ball well along the line finding spaces down the left wing, luckily Jessica J had spotted this tracking across the backline followed by a massive hit to put the player into touch, class. Supporters are now checking their watches, asking how much time is left. Having been treated to a great game. Again, the lineout works well for Chippenham with Faith giving good service like she has all game. The ball going between forwards and backs. Mollie nearly got rewarded for her good game but was caught. Forwards and backs securing good ball to go again keeping the ball alive. Jessica not to be out-scored by her sister again used the space made from tired bodies and went around the outside to score in the corner. 29-22 Final whistle.

A close game between two well matched teams gave for an exciting game, which the girls show-cased as a great game for girl’s rugby. Both teams showed great speed, strength and support and fantastic sportsmanship.

Thank you, Kingswood, for a fab game, looking forward to the return fixture. For Chippenham, some great individual performances and team play. However, as there always is – some work on points. Well done girls for a good win on your opening match, you made us all smile and proud.

Next game on 23rd Sept at home.
