The Swans with a number of Australian stars started strongly with Martyn Hinchey winning the hit-outs and their midfield onto the clearances supplying their forward line. The Redbacks, not having played for a few weeks, didn’t have the usual flow to their game but managed to keep in touch with solid work from Lee Tarn and Rory Auld in midfield. Pete Woodall and Luke Rose got the Redbacks on the board with a couple of well taken goals, following some solid shepherding from debutant Steve Kemp. Unfortunately, Rose sustained an ankle injury and struggled to play much more.
The game continued in much the same vein, the Redbacks trying to lift themselves but giving away some easy goals in balance. The back 3 of Tom Case, Luke Cottis and Chris Matthews had a tough task against wily opponents, but battled hard all day to reduce their effectiveness and limit scoring opportunities.
With the Swans looking to take the points, Case, Tarn and Cottis stepped up to the mark to supply enough ball to the forward line to edge in front. A behind to the Swans leveled the scores and in spite of desperation footy being played in the final minutes, neither side could break the deadlock. A fantastic match, played in a fine spirit.
