After Chippenham had spurned two early chances, Dior Angus should have put Banbury in front on 13 minutes but he blazed over the bar. A minute later the Puritans took the lead when a low through ball picked out Ricky Johnson in space and he was allowed the time to place his shot beyond Kevin Sawyer.
Chippenham went on to enjoy the majority of first half possession but a battling Banbury side quickly closed them down and restricted the number of chances to a premium. Luke Gullick should have equalized on twenty seven minutes when his mazy run took him into the Banbury area but he shot straight at keeper Andy Kemp’s legs.
In the second half the home side’s Angus blazed an early chance over the bar; it proved costly as Chippenham restored parity just past the hour mark when James Guthrie rounded Joe Coleman before crossing a low ball into the crowded area where Alan Griffin emerged to turn the ball over the line.
The Bluebirds might have taken all three points as Kemp did well to thwart Dave Gilroy whilst Ashley Williams saw his first time shot on the run narrowly clear the bar. At the other end a Banbury cross from the left went across goal to three unmarked players but substitute Ryan Howell failed to control the ball.
