Chippenham Town 1 1 Bristol Rovers XI
Chippenham will be counting the cost of this friendly against a young Rovers’ XI as several players picked up injuries; including goal scorer Ashley Edenborough and last season’s top scorer Lewis Powell.
Chippenham pressed from the start and took the lead on seven minutes when Scott Lye threaded the ball to Edenborough who lifted his shot over the advancing Sam Butler. Rovers equalized against the run of play on 20 minutes with a fine individual goal from the impressive Robbi Maggs, who picked up a loose ball outside of the area before drilling a low shot across Chris Snoddy. Before the interval Sam Allison twice went close for the Bluebirds, whilst Iain Harvey and Shaun Lamb both fired over the bar. Jack McKenna’s long range effort was held by Snoddy whilst Powell headed over from substitute Matteo King’s corner. Chippenham made a raft of changes at the break and the match deteriorated in fluency. Rob Smith shot over for the home side whilst Lamb headed against a post.
Rovers should have snatched the lead just after the hour mark when McKenna’s free kick was headed wide by Jordan Tilson. Despite their dominance Chippenham could not penetrate a resolute visiting defence a second time as Shaun Benison and Smart both failed with late efforts.
