WEYMOUTH 2 0 CHIPPENHAM TOWN – Sat 16th September 2017 (FA Cup 2nd Qualifying Round)

Chippenham bowed out of the FA Cup to Southern Premier League side Weymouth at a rain sodden Bob Lucas stadium.

Chippenham bowed out of the FA Cup to Southern Premier League side Weymouth at a rain sodden Bob Lucas stadium.
Ironically, the last time the Bluebirds lost their first FA Cup game (apart from the Wells City debacle) was to the same opponents in season 2002-03.
The Bluebirds were without injured captain Greg Tindle, with Will Richards taking the skipper’s armband, whilst Dean Evans and Andy Sandell’s injuries saw them start on the bench.
Despite creating twenty chances and playing against ten men for the final half hour the Bluebirds succumbed to a goal in each half. Chippenham dominated the opening twenty five minutes with Nuno Felix’s sixth minute cross hitting Matt Smith’s shins and rolling wide.
Two minutes later Jared Thomson failed to gather Charlie Davis’s free kick and the ball was scrambled clear by the Bluebird defence.
On ten minutes Jake Andrews’s long throw found Alex Ferguson whose shot was blocked on the line, with Will Richards’s follow up effort being charged down.
On thirteen minutes Scott Donnelly drove over the bar after good build up play by James Guthrie and Dave Pratt.
Four minutes later Dan Bowman’s deep cross was just headed away by a Weymouth defender in front of the lurking Pratt.
Felix then tried his luck from forty yards but his ambitious effort went wide.
On twenty four minutes Chippenham should have taken the lead when a low through ball left Jake Andrews with only Mark Travers to beat but his shot hit the base of a post.
Weymouth took the lead two minutes later with their first threat on goal.
The Bluebirds were caught out by a long Weymouth throw and Ben Thompson raced clear before presenting Charlie Davis with a simple tap in.
Davis and Brandon Goodship failed with further efforts for the Terras before Chippenham regained the initiative as Donnelly's shot was deflected behind and Andrews and Matt Smith both saw shots blocked.
Mark Cooper’s throw saw Brandon Goodship drive infield and his fierce shot was held by Thompson at the second attempt.
Five minutes before the break Smith’s shot was blocked whilst Ferguson's shot looked to be heading for goal until a last minute deflection sent it wide, whilst Pratt headed Bowman's deep cross over the bar.
The first half action finished with Goodship shooting wide. Four minutes into the second half Smith’s shot went wide with Pratt just failing to get a foot to it.
Weymouth settled the contest a minute later when a Weymouth pass saw the ball get trapped under Felix’s feet and Cooper, who started the season at Chippenham before returning to Weymouth, took advantage to fire home.
Just before the hour mark Smith’s cross deflected off a defender forcing Travers to make a good save at his near post, whilst Smith’s downward header bounced up nicely into Travers’s arms The Bluebirds were given a glimmer of hope on the hour mark when Calvin Brooks received his second yellow card but they failed to really test Mark Travers in the home goal.
Donnelly again volleyed over the bar whilst Andrews attempted to pick his spot only for his shot to be blocked.
Travers distinguished himself when he blocked a Mike Jones shot on the line with his leg.
On eighty nine minutes substitute Sandell found Andrews whose right-footed shot went just wide of the angle of post and bar. In stoppage time Pratt headed over from an Andrews cross whilst Guthrie’s shot from outside of the area was blocked.
