Southern League newcomers Melksham Town gave Chippenham Town a good run for their money but in the end the National South visitors were too strong for their local neighbours.
The first chance fell to Karnell Chambers who failed to back heel a fourth minute cross from George Rigg from a yard out.
Former Bluebird, Luke Ballinger had Melksham’s best chance of the opening half after just seven minutes when he was presented with an unopposed shooting opportunity in a central position, but from twenty five yards out he dragged his effort wide.
Chippenham took the lead five minutes later when Jack Compton picked out Karnell Chambers who hit home a superb left footed volley.
On the quarter hour mark a corner routine involving Compton and James Guthrie ended with Chambers hitting the side netting.
Another former Bluebird, keeper Kent Kauppinen denied James Guthrie in a one on one situation the ball deflecting behind for a corner. Josh Smile doubled the lead on twenty minutes when Compton’s corner found the midfielder thirty yards out and his low shot went through a crowd of players and into the net.
Six minutes later Compton cut in from the right and his left footed shot was blocked by Kauppinen’s legs. From a Compton corner the ball was headed back across goal and Curtis McDonald’s header went straight at Kauppinen.
Another cross from the rampaging Rigg saw Guthrie fail to get enough purchase on his header and the ball went wide.
The final chance of the half saw a Compton free kick clear the bar. Kauppinen was again in the thick of the action four minutes after the interval when he saved an Andy Sandell penalty, awarded after a trip on Nick McCootie.
Four minutes later Seth Wain’s shot on the turn went wide whilst on fifty six minutes
Melksham almost pulled a goal back as substitute Gary Higdon headed against the crossbar. Compton again saw Kauppinen block his fifty eighth minute effort whilst Dean Evans fired over.
Melksham’s Dave Thompson’s free kick from his own half then hit the bar and Will Puddy held Sayeed Ibrahim’s follow-up header. Mark Wall’s seventy eighth minute free kick went straight at Puddy.
McCootie then saw successive shots blocked whilst Sandell’s lobbed effort was ruled out for a marginal offside.
Substitute Billy Gleed almost hit a third from McCootie’s pass but his close range shot was kicked off the line.
Gleed deservedly got on the score sheet three minutes from time when Luke Ellington’s shot was blocked and he followed up to turn the ball home.
