CHIPPENHAM TOWN 1 4 WELLING UNITED – Sat 11th Aug 2018

For the second successive Saturday the Bluebirds conceded four goals.

For the second successive Saturday the Bluebirds conceded four goals.
Wily Welling had too much guile and knowhow as they ran out comfortable winners despite a bright start from the home side.
As early as the third minute a mistake in the Welling defence allowed Karnell Chambers a shooting opportunity but he slipped on the wet surface in the act of shooting and Wings custodian had time to dive to his right to save just inside a post.
Kieran Parsell’e free kick two minutes later saw Alex Ferguson and Andy Sandelle combine for Parselle to scuff a shot goal wards that Wilks again had no trouble in saving.
On nine minutes Richard Orlu handled Sandell’s cross and the resulting free kick was floated over the wall by Josh Smile but straight to Wilks. The visitors took the lead on thirteen minutes when Bradley Goldberg’s goal bound header was blocked but the loose ball fell to Brendan Kiernan who fired home from the edge of the area.
Chippenham equalized ten minutes later as the Wings defence failed to clear Sandell’s long throw allowing Chambers to hit a low shot through a crowd of players.
Chippenham were then on the wrong end of two refereeing decisions as Chambers was free on goal but appeared to be barged off the ball but nothing was given whilst Welling were awarded a harsh free kick moments later.
If that was bad things were about to get worse as Welling regained the lead just after the half hour with a disputed penalty,
Chippenham claimed Danny Mills had not been fouled outside the area by Will Richards but referee Mr. Massey-Ellis decided otherwise and awarded a free kick.
Then on the advice of an assistant he changed his mind and awarded a penalty despite Mills still sitting inside the ‘D’ from the original foul. Goldberg made no mistake from the spot giving on loan Swindon Town keeper Will Henry no chance. Jordan Gibbons was then off target with his shot as the Wings’ tails were up and they added a third five minutes before the break after Henry superbly palmed out Mills’s header but a defensive clearance went to Thierry Audel who volleyed home the goal of the game.
Chippenham continued to press after the break as Welling relied on breakaways.
Goldberg robbed Ferguson but shot straight at Henry whilst Mills rolled a shot across the face of goal. Jack Jebb brought a great diving one-handed save from Henry whilst Sandell’s shot was blocked at the expence of a corner and another effort from the striker was also pushed behind for a flag-kick by Wilks.
On seventy one minutes Chambers’s low ball across the face of goal just eluded Sandell and substitute Nick McCootie.
Ten minutes from time James Guthrie’s free kick went through everyone and just wide, nine minutes from time when a deep cross was headed goalwards by Mills and Kiernan headed home from close in.
