Eastbourne Borough recorded a league double over Chippenham but almost threw away a 3-1 lead in stoppage time as Chippenham reduced the arrears to 3-2 in the 92nd minute and then Will Richards blasted over the bar two minutes later.
The Sussex side were quicker to the ball and harried and pressed the Bluebirds out of their stride although all three of the Sports goals were down to defensive errors.
Eastbourne held the upper hand early on forcing a series of free kicks and Dean Cox also went close forcing Will Puddy into a fourth minute one-handed diving save.
Two minutes later Jack Compton’s free kick saw Kieran Parselle’s headed effort flash across the face of goal and past the far post.
On eleven minutes Parselle’s free kick was touched over the bar by on loan Watford keeper Sam Howes.
Midway through the half a Sports free kick was not cleared and the ball fell to Cox who volleyed over the bar.
Just past the half hour the visitors lost influential skipper Sergio Torres to injury.
However they took the lead two minutes later when a mistake by Rhys Davies allowed Charlie Walker to cross to the unmarked Joe Quigley, on loan from Bromley, and he easily beat Puddy from close in.
Four minutes later another defensive lapse when the home defence had two failed attempts to clear Lloyd Dawes’s cross again saw Quigley convert from beyond the far post.
In the final minute of the half Eastbourne’s Kristian Campbell tripped Compton as he cut inside but somehow managed to escape a second yellow card and the resultant free kick taken by Compton was held by Howes.
After the break the Bluebirds conceded a needless corner and Kane Wills’s flag kick found Cox whose low volley was saved by Puddy.
On fifty seven minutes Parselle was again off target with a headed effort from Compton’s corner.
James Guthrie pulled a goal back on the hour mark when he thumped a thirty yard shot past Howes after being teed up by Nat Jarvis.
On sixty six minutes substitute Andrew Briggs’s long ball found Quigley but his shot was just wide.
A minute later Chippenham gave the ball away in midfield and Wills took advantage to drive into the Bluebirds area and beat Puddy with a low shot.
On seventy seven minutes Guthrie found himself in a similar position to his goal but on this occasion Howes was able to save his shot. Substitute Nick McCootie set up a grandstand finish when he netted in the ninety second minute from a goalmouth scramble after the Sussex outfit had failed to clear Tariq Ossai’s cross.
Two minutes later substitute Josh Smile’s ball in saw a bout of head tennis that ended with Richards blazing over the bar from ten yards out as the Sussex side held on for the points.
