CHIPPENHAM TOWN 4 3 ST ALBANS CITY – Sat 13th April 2013
The noisy reaction of the crowd at the end of this match, bolstered by twenty five members of Chippenham’s Norwegian supporters’ club, showed how vital this result was for the Bluebirds.
Three victories in a week after going 126 days without one, has given a significant boost to the Bluebirds’ fight against relegation. The lead changed hands three times as Chippenham scored twice in each half to clinch the three points.
The victory was soured by an 89th minute injury to Bluebirds’ striker Lee Phillips who was stretchered off with a badly gashed knee.
That stoppage contributed to over nine minutes of stoppage time and frayed the home crowds’ nerves.
Phillips gave Chippenham an early lead with a sweetly struck volley before St Albans equalised on the half hour when Elliott Godfrey’s low shot rolled against the base of a post before rolling across the line and into the net.
Toby Osman restored the home lead four minutes later when he cushioned the ball on his chest before crashing home a volley from twenty yards. St Albans centre back Joe Bruce, who had already seen seventh minute header cleared off the line by Iain Harvey, then converted a corner as he tapped home at the far post. In first half stoppage time the Saints were awarded a fortuitous penalty, when the ball was driven against Harvey from a yard away and the referee awarded a spot kick for handball which Greg Ngoyi converted.
Chippenham made it three each on fifty five minutes when McClennan clipped the ball into the path of James Guthrie who chested it down before firing home.
Chippenham endured a piece of good fortune midway through the half when Ben John’s clearance fell to Godfrey who lobbed the ball back over the Chippenham keeper but his effort hit the bar.
The all important goal came fifteen minutes from time when McClennan crossed for substitute Tom Knighton who lobbed the ball over Nick Hardy from close range.
